Background. The University of Silesia, which is located in 5 cities of the region: Katowice, Sosnowiec, Chorzów, Cieszyn, and Rybnik, is one of the most prestigious universities in the southern part of the country and one of the biggest public universities in Poland.
The University of Silesia collaborates with over 300 higher education institutions from all over the world through student and academic staff exchanges and joint educational and research projects. It is a member of numerous international associations i.e. the European University Association, the European University Information System, etc. It actively participates in European Commission initiatives focused both on educational and scientific development, and realises projects within the Lifelong Learning Programme, the Research Fund for Coal and Steel and Framework Programmes.
Education. 12 faculties and several independent, interdisciplinary units provide 45 programmes and nearly 130 specializations approved by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education whose quality is continuously being evaluated by the State Accreditation Committee. The educational offer of the University covers Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral programmes taught both in Polish and English. Graduates can join over 80 postgraduate courses created to develop professional skills. Implementing the lifelong learning idea, the University runs two important initiatives: the Children’s University of Silesia and the University of the Third Age.
Students’ facilities. The infrastructure of the University provides excellent conditions for study and leisure.
With 10 student hostels, the University of Silesia can provide accommodation for all international students. The canteens and students’ clubs are also part of the campus.
In addition to the Silesian Library, the oldest and the biggest library in the region, students can access the main University Library and 15 others located at the faculties.
Students interested in sport can join the Academic Sports Association, which offers about 32 sports including: judo, yoga, ju-jitsu, karate, bridge, chess, skiing, horse riding, volleyball, basketball, and many others.
Support services. The Student Support Office, Careers Office, Disability Support Service and Student Government are units that help students with everyday issues. They provide a possibility to join student’s associations, participate in meetings with employers and get detailed information about studies, accommodation, Deans' offices, financial and psychological support and cultural or sports events. International students also get special support from the Admissions Office.
Polish language courses. The School of Polish Language and Culture is a specialized unit of the University of Silesia which offers an assortment of courses designed to improve Polish language skills and provide knowledge about Polish culture. The educational offer of the School includes monthly, semester-long and year-long courses which can easily be matched to the level of personal linguistic ability.
